#1 Start a blog

As I'm writing this it's been more than three years ago that I started my blog: Scream if you're on fire. Digging up and reading the first post I see that it was about my boss at the time at The Swedish Radio and about how he used to be a punk rocker. The blog that started with a handful of readers a week evolved in to having between 200 - 300 readers daily.

These days everybody’s a blogger; The 12 year-old girl posting pictures of what she's wearing every day and the 48 year-old fathers that review movies that haven't premiered in Sweden yet. But despite the increasing supply of blogs I don't feel particularly inspired. There are few idea-based blogs. Almost none of the blogs around stand out. It's time for you to take one of your idea seeds, develop it into a new concept and then really go at it. How about starting:

1.    A blog about you stalking someone. You write about the person in question, take pictures of them, and keep a log of all their actions.
2.    An action blog about your life. Use your everyday life and the people in it as a blueprint and then start adding an arch-nemesis, evil henchmen, ninjas and explosions. Add special effects and re-imagine your life as an action movie.
3.    A blog where you're the editor but where you every week find a new and inspiring guest writer – a photographer, doctor, volunteer, fisherman or athlete – who has their own blog. You administer the blog and find the darlings and they create the content.
4.    A list-based blog. People love lists! A few suggestions:
•    Things I like.
•    Things I hate.
•    Things I would never dare to tell other people that I'm thinking.
•    Things I wish other people did.
•    Things I wish my parents had warned me about.

Sometimes democracy and freedom of speech can slow you down. You live in a country where you more or less can do whatever you want. You enjoy enormous freedom and countless opportunities compared to other countries. That thought in itself can be quite stressful. It's like standing by the toothpaste shelf at the super market. It's impossible to choose. There are so many variations. I know. I've been there. But this doesn't mean you should marry your sofa and become a sloth. The first step will often be the hardest. Then it gets easier and easier. Start with standing up, grab a pen and a paper and develop a blog concept. Go to any blog hosting site and create an account. Then become the writer instead of the reader. Activity instead of passivity.

Required time:
Starting it doesn't take long. An hour to develop a good concept. Another hour to create the blog. Then you choose how often you want to write and how long you want the texts to be. Start small and then expand. A little like working out a muscle. Light weights, then increasingly heavier ones.
Cost:
Free.
Cons:
None.
Pros:
You get an enormous pool to pour your creativity in to. You're your own editor, writer, and publisher. Nobody tells you what to write or how to write it. Complete creative freedom.
