When the winter darkness comes to Moomin Valley, the family closes down the house and draws the curtains to sleep in pine boughs for as long as the cold lasts. And from this we have something to learn, because as winter sweeps over us it gets cold, slippery, wet, dark and difficult. You become tired, drowsy, dreaming of spring and the longing for light. We are not made for winter and therefore you should go into hibernation, at least for a day.
Make sure to clear your hibernation day from commitments. No coffee, no meeting friends, no catching up with school or work. This is not your own time, this is hibernation time. You, and the day, will be in hibernation.
Fall asleep in your favorite pajamas, deep down under the covers. Turn on a night light and put it in the window. When you wake up, go back to sleep. You don’t get out of bed because you have nothing planned. No two hibernations are alike. Read the newspaper for hours or eat a long breakfast. Eat another breakfast. Hide under a bedcover on the couch and rest to your favorite album. Watch a movie or read a book. Make a cup of coffee with care, and drink it slowly. Light candles and read old comics. Go to bed whenever you want. Tomorrow does not exist. It’s outside of your hibernation and does not belong here.
