#94 Start a study group

Being bored can be the best thing that could happen. Few things are better topsoil for ideas to grow in than boredom. Nowadays, I’m almost never bored, so I need to create situations for myself where I am forcing myself to be bored. And then the thoughts explode into the creative things, projects and texts.

When I was younger, I quite often found myself in boring situations; at home, in the courtyard and in school. In the courtyard, it was easier to do something about the boredom because it seldom came with an angry teacher, armed with a ruler, telling you to sit still.

I was five years old when we started a detective agency. I borrowed my dad's fanny pack and filled it with the important things that a detective should have; pen, notebook, small re-sealable bags, pepper, rubber bands and ear plugs. I had seen on television how McGyver could defuse a bomb by using a paper clip and a little adhesive tape so that I saw to it that the fanny pack had these things too.

One of the girls in the detective agency had an older sister who lived near the courtyard. The big sister was with an older guy. He was rotten to her, so we decided that he was a criminal and that we needed to spy on him. We sat with binoculars in the bushes for hours, wrote down the registration numbers of cars that drove by and picked up the cigarette butts from passers-by. We put the butts in the small bags and noted down the date and time of when we had found the clue with red felt-tip pen on a label that we put on the bag.

Required time:
Starting a study group regardless of whether it’s a detective or a debate club won’t take more than an hour. Simply download the form online or at the nearest ABF office. But you’re supposed to meet regularly in the study group to do what it is you’ve decided to do. It’s different from case to case, how many times you want to meet and how long you meet each time.
Cost:
Free. It is even as luxurious as you getting compensation from the ABF up to about a 100 euro a month to meet in their study group.
Cons:
A piece of paper to fill in. It takes about a minute each time you meet.
Pros:
You meet and fuss or spy in the group, whilst receiving funds for doing so. It's like a hobby you get paid for.
