# 95 Start collecting something

A few years ago when I worked at the radio program Frank at P3 I went to a little cabin in the woods outside Stenungsund to interview singer/songwriter Kristofer Åstrom. When I drove up to the little dirt road toward the house a happy greyhound met me and waved politely with its tail. Then Kristofer came and welcomed me in his northern Swedish accent.

I walked into the house and got coffee while Kristofer told me about his new album, how he recorded it and that there was a spring a bit further away which, it was said, contained magical water. I saw the house, all the nooks and crannies, kitchen, living room and recording room. But the doors to one of the rooms remained closed. I was of course obstinately curious about that room. After much nagging on my part and Kristofer became more and more embarrassed until he opened the door to the room.

What I saw was an explosion of unopened toys, posters, action figures, films and books. Bed sheets, carpet, lamp and curtains all with the same motif. Everything in the room was taken from the Star Wars-films. I turned around and Christopher looked down at the floor.
“Is there something you want to say into the microphone”, I asked him. He shook his head.

Required time:
It isn’t possible to estimate how long it will take to research, buy or find things you want to accumulate, organize, catalogue and then set them up. You just have to admit that it will take ridiculous amount of time.
Cost:
Ridiculous amounts when it comes to rarities, collectors’ toys or stamps. There are also ways to find bargains through auction sites on the Internet, actual auctions in reality or in shops. But you can usually assume that it will cost a lot if you don’t start collecting pine cones or anything else that exists in nature or is free.
Cons:
You may become obsessed with your collection. It can take considerable time and cost a lot. Moreover, it can take up much space in your home.
Pros:
Many collectors claim that it has a meditative effect and that they feel calm when they’re working with their collection. That it is only there that they can be themselves and don’t have to worry about the outside world. I collected stamps for a while, but grew so restless after a couple of weeks that I started judo instead. Then I got tired of it and started on baseball. Later on archery, table tennis, chess… Not really my thing.
