#120 Exchange books

Today's guest blogger is Johanna Karlsson, who is one of five behind the hyped blog bokhora.se. The blog seeks to promote endless reading and is independent of everything except the written word itself.

Recycling has become quite popular. Nowadays you can recycle almost anything. You can recycle books too, but it is seldom you get anything other than a good conscience for it. It's a good thing, but if you want to transform your old, already-read books on the bookshelf for new, unread ones, you can arrange a book exchange with your friends.

You need a flat surface on which to put all the books to be traded. For example, a few tables, a large floor area or blankets on the grass. For a book exchange, you will need to invite some friends; I recommend 5-15 people. Don't only invite your closest friends, you may have very similar and taste in books and the whole point of a book exchange is to find new things. Before sending out invitations, you will need to agree on how many books one can bring. More than 15 books is usually too much work.

How you choose to organize the book exchange is up to you. On Bokhora we usually draw straws to decide the order and then choose onebook at a time until all are satisfied.

Required time:
A book exchange usually takes about one hour. First, putting out all the books, which doesn't usually take long. It will then be maybe 20 minutes of browsing the books, receiving tips and making your own priority list (on paper or in your head). The act of exchanging books takes up to 20 minutes. Then packing up the books and going home, or drinking coffee or dinner with your new book friends. In this case, the book exchange can run pretty long.
Cost:
A book exchange is completely free, unless you choose to offer soft drinks, wine, coffee or food or need to rent a large room to be in.
Cons:
There are no real disadvantages, except that it may be difficult to find a good local that so many people can be in and an area where the books can be. The sun is shining and it's hot, you can be outdoors, where there's an unlimited amount of space.
Pros:
You save money, you can recycle books - which is very attractive for the environment. You don't fill your already crowded bookshelf, but instead replace the old, boring books with new, exciting ones.
