#135 Look at things far away

Today's guest blogger is Jesper Rönndahl, who is a comedian. He lives in Malmö and is 30 years old. You've probably heard him on P3's program, Hej Domstol. Or, perhaps you're more interested in music and maybe you've encountered him as a producer of P3 Hiphop. On television, he has been involved with both Grilled and Bobster.

Now you're in front of a screen again! Don’t you get tired of it? Nah you're not, because it's full of colors and festive words and moving images. But you know what's tired? Your eyes! Because you may think that your butt is mush and your stomach is soggy - but that's nothing compared to what your eye is. The problem is that people nowadays are looking at things that are too close. Computer monitors, books, cell phones - everything is right in front of our noses. And that's what the eye likes best, because then it doesn't have to make an effort at all. 

But when you are suddenly forced to look at a house from a distance - then it's blurry for some reason. The actual house isn't blurry of course, it's just the muscle around your lens that has become so lazy that it's not able to pull the lens so much that you can focus on the house. 

And what do you do? Well, you go to the optician and say "I'm nearsighted!" And you'll get a prosthesis. I don't think that's okay! If a giant fat man would go to the doctor and say "I'm so fat I can hardly get up out of bed," the doctor wouldn't say "Okay, but then we reinforce the bed legs, allowing you to thicken yourself even more!" Would he? No, he wouldn't say that. He would tell the fatty to start working out. 

And that is exactly what I'm telling you and your fat lens! Instead of giving money to an optician - go out and look at things that are far away! Bring a friend, go to the open plains, and pick out something - a tree, a truck, an old man with a cane - that is at a good distance from you and then flex your eyes and try to describe the thing as well as you can. Oh yes, put that eye to work! Sure, the little translucent fatty puts up a fight at first, but as its guardian, you need to live up to your responsibilities here. There are people who have managed to work out their nearsightedness completely! 

The fact is that myopia is an awful lot more common today than one hundred years ago, despite that we haven't changed physically at all. An example: at the end of last century less than 1% of the Greenland Inuit were nearsighted, today the figure is 50%! Why? Because 100 years ago they established the Danish school system, which is to read books instead of watching for polar bears on the horizon. 

And if you still want to stare at a screen, do this: put your TV or whatever it is on a small radio-controlled car that goes further and further away from you all the time. The larger the apartment you have, the better. 

PS: Nearsightedness need not come about because one's lens muscles are untrained. It may also be due to eating too much bread as a child. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1909075.stm

Required time: 
It depends on how you live. If you live in the countryside and have a horizon just around the corner, it takes five minutes. But if you live in a city and have to go to the horizon then it can of course take longer. (NOTE: You can not go to the horizon. It is in its nature. It has a sort of social phobia, which makes it never want to meet you.)
Cost: 
Free. Possibly you might need a bus ticket.
Cons: 
When beginning to become too good at looking at things from far away, you can be bothered with how people behave when they think no one is watching. E.g., if someone is sitting by himself in a boat far out on a lake, and then suddenly pulls off a scab and eats it, then you might find that disgusting. But then it's really you who has invaded the fisherman's private life. There is also a risk that people start calling you Legolas or some sort of Indian name.
Pros:
