#169 Play "Four degrees of Kevin Bacon"

Stefán Hilmarsson is 21 years old and is a kind-hearted law student from Gothenburg. Moreover, he has never met an foreigner blonder than himself, plays guitar and likes to walk around and look at the statues in King's Park. By autumn, he will also satisfy his interest in film by taking a class in film science.

A number of years ago my brother suggested that we play a game he knew. The game was called "Four degrees of Kevin Bacon". This is a game we've come back to many times since. Sometimes when we spend too much time together, we become obsessed.

The game is goes like this, one of us mentions an actor, and the objective is to reach a movie that Kevin Bacon has starred in, in four steps or less. One step is a movie that two actors have starred in.

Example:
I mention Stellan Skarsgård.
Stellan stars in "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" with Johnny Depp (one step)
Depp stars with Benicio del Toro in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (two steps)
Benicio stars with Brad Pitt in "Snatch" (three steps)
Brad Pitt and Kevin Bacon star together in "Sleepers" (four stages)

According to Wikipedia, the game originated in when Kevin Bacon on one occasion claimed that he had worked with everybody in Hollywood or, at least, him and the people he's starred with has. After this statement, three students from Allbright College in the U.S. Developed a game based on the theory Six Degrees of Separation. The game was called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon which allows you to reach Bacon in six steps instead of four. The game is also available as a board game as well as an online version (http://www.thekevinbacongame.com/

For those who can't handle the challenge, and instead want to cheat there's also the page www.oracleofbacon.com. With the help of the page you can for example see that Navid Modiris uncle actor Mehran Modiri is only three steps away from Bacon!

Bonus - Thorsten Flinck likes Kevin Bacon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP6a3a9OHG0

Required time:
Between five minutes and a full day. My record is probably that the game was me and my brother's only topic of conversation during a three-hour walk.
Cost:
Free, but it can be strenuous if you want to see the movies that get mentioned and then go and buy or rent several movies. My (legal) advice is to, in that case, seek out the nearest library, get a library card and borrow movies there.
Cons:
Not everyone might appreciate this game. It can be difficult if you don't have a interest in film. It can be really frustrating sometimes if you don't succeed (but you can always click a little around www.imdb.com or cheat by using www.oracleofbacon.com).
Pros:
For some, it can be quite fun. A good pastime. It trains the memory and you become very good at remembering movies and actors.
