#331 Celebrate your heroes
The concept of 365 things you can do emerged in Navid Modiri’s head as he sat in an airport hyper-ventilating over how he’d become a miserable human being. But as he looked up between his not-breathing he saw John Tells book "100 ways to save the world". That’s how 365 things started. This is a way to praise Johan Tell, and the planet. Here are: Seven things you can do to save the world.
When I was ten years old I was just as nerdy as I am today. I loved Ace of Base. In fact, the first record I bought with my own money was "Happy Nation - U.S. Edition". I knew all the lyrics, could play some tunes on my Yamaha keyboard and had even learned some of the moves that the band members mastered in the handful of videos released during their heyday. I worshiped the ground they walked on. This was, of course, before it turned out that Ulf was an old Nazi. But never mind that now.
My old school teacher was nothing to phone home about. She yelled at us, hated us from the start and then when we started the sixth grade she left for a therapy center in Germany and blamed her mental instability on a bunch of children. But she had one advantage: she knew the sisters Berggren's mother. The sisters are Jenny and Malin Berggren from Ace of Base. I was head over heels in love with both of them. And my old school teacher saw to it that I started to correspond with them. I remember I wrote a long first letter about how much I loved their music and how they influenced me with their songs. The letter I got back was a few lines and signed by both sisters. I was absolutely ecstatic. I sent several more letters. Got no response. Sent more. Got no response. But never mind that now.
To celebrate our heroes by writing letters or e-mail to them makes them continue to inspire and make good music, art, architecture or policy. Maybe your heroes work in the cancer clinic, hospital or cemetery. Make sure to praise them for the work they do. It will give them energy and they will do even better in the future. THAT is sustainable development for real. People giving other people pep.
