Many children say that they would like to build their own house. Many adults tend to have fun and poke the children in their stomach and say that it's cute and nice. The question is why it’s automatically a good thing that only adults design our houses and buildings.
All the cities look more or less the same. All medium-sized Swedish cities look the same. I don’t know if it’s due to function, modesty, or a combination of the two. It’s smart to build square houses because they can fit more that way. It’s smart to build sloping roofs in Sweden so that rain water can drain away. In addition, we don’t want to paint that house in pink because then it sticks out and that isn’t good if you’re of the modest persuasion. Better to have everything the same colors, same shapes and the same flat and square surfaces.
Many children say that they would like to build their own houses. I understand them. Sweden doesn’t look like a huge chunk of fun. The question is whether children alter their taste or get used to their surroundings as they grow older, thinking that this is the way a city looks. It’s a fact that this is how it should look like, so you might as well get used to the idea.
Fuck no. On the contrary. More punks should become architects. More architects should listen to punk and try yoga. Yoga is based on the cat’s way of moving its body. Maybe this way we’ll end up with new shapes and lines making up our buildings and houses.
Draw your dream home in three steps.
1. Feel. Choose three emotions or states you want as keywords. Like sadness, strength and simplicity.
2. Think. How can you translate these feelings into shapes, what does sadness look like? What color is strength? Where around you are the simplest shapes? Draw and write on a piece of paper.
3. Do. Use scissors, glue sticks and pencil. Like when you put together a gingerbread house. Experiment. Fuck how it should be. Try things out. Be your own answers. Make errors. Redo.
Bonus - Punk architect Bjarke Ingels http://www.big.dk/ has written a book called Yes Is
More, which is about to draw one’s dream house. One of the houses include a sloping roof that looks like a skateboard ramp. Also check out this sick house that he designed. http://www.inhabitat.com/wp-content/uploads/ren-6.jpg
