#335 Christmas decorate your city

Today’s guest blogger is Sofia Arvidsson, she runs 365 Malmo. She loves crafts and to collect a lot of things, and is studying to become a preschool teacher. + http://365malmo.wordpress.com/

At around this time, the municipalities usually kick it up a notch. There are lights that sparkle, Chrismas trees that look confused and (at least if you live in Malmö) colorful packages hanging from them. But the decorating of the public sphere doesn’t stop there. The shops seem to compete on who has the most glitter in their window and the banks blow the dust off these grotesque porcelain gnomes that have been around for the last ten years.

Now you might think that I hate Christmas, but this is really not the case. I just don’t like when it’s shoved down in my throat in mid-November. To get a contrast to the Christmas-mania of stores and municipalities I’ll decorate my town myself this Christmas. Small ornaments of various kinds will pop up around Malmö, and my hope is that it will make people stop for a second in all the Christmas chaos and remember for a moment that once upon a time we made our own ornaments instead of buying mass produced gnomes in the nearest store.

Look at the Malmö-blog for tips on how to Christmas decorate your city!
